Diet Plan for Pneumonia and Bronchitis

Pneumonia is a contagious infection with symptoms that range from mild (cold and flu-like) to severe. How serious your case of pneumonia is, depends on the particular germ causing pneumonia, your overall health, and your age.


Pneumonia is an infection in one or both of your lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi when there is an infection in the lungs, several things happen, including:

  • Your airways swell (become inflamed)
  • The air sacs in the lungs fill with mucus and other fluids.
  • When both lungs get infected, it can be called Double Pneumonia
  • When caused by bacteria or viruses, it can be contagious

Pneumonia caused by fungi is not contagious. The fungi are in the soil, which becomes airborne and inhaled, but it is not spread from person to person.

Signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:

  • Chest pain when you breathe or cough
  • Confusion or changes in mental awareness (in adults age 65 and older)
  • Cough, which may produce phlegm
  • Fatigue
  • Fever, sweating, and shaking chills
  • Lower than normal body temperature (in adults older than age 65 and people with weak immune systems)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath
  • People often misunderstand Bronchitis with pneumonia

Bronchitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the bronchi, the airways that carry air to and from the lungs.

In some cases, a person with bronchitis develops a secondary infection that may turn into pneumonia, usually when a bacterial infection spreads from the bronchial tubes to the lungs.
